In 2019, we redesigned our company: Motos Formentor SL became Formentor Rent a Car. We changed our name and modernized the website, but we never lost sight of the roots that have shaped us. Our story began in 1952 with Martí Amengual, his wife Joana Aina Mascaró, and Gabriel Quetglas.
Originally from the inland of the island, Martí, Joana, and Gabriel moved to Puerto de Pollensa and opened a small office on Carrer de les Monges. They started with bicycle rentals and 11 Vespas, waiting for the growing tourism in Mallorca to offer them a better future than life in the countryside. It wasn’t until 1959 that Motos Formentor acquired its first cars: three Renault 4-4s and two second-hand Renault Dauphines brought from Barcelona due to the difficulty of finding cars for sale in Mallorca.
In 1960, the company purchased its first SEAT 600s, which quickly became the flagship vehicles of Motos Formentor, just as they were across Spain. These changes led to the company relocating to a larger office on the same street in 1965, after Gabriel Quetglas left the business, and hiring its first employee.
By 1972, with 5 employees, 50 cars, and 20 motorcycles, Motos Formentor began offering services to the airport and opened the company’s central offices on Passeig Saralegui in Port de Pollença. In 1956, during the tourism boom, the fleet grew to 110 cars, largely thanks to offering customers the option of having their rental car delivered to their hotel or vacation home in northern Mallorca. The company also collaborated with the first tour operators on the island, OSL and Travel Club, who provided rental cars through Motos Formentor at their vacation rental homes.
Generational change began in 1978 when Martí Amengual Mascaró, son of Martí and Joana Aina, joined the company as a workshop assistant. In the 1980s, the company’s activity increased, prompting the opening of two new offices—one in Puerto de Pollensa and another in Cala Sant Vicenç—and the acquisition of 50 more cars.
The company continued to grow, and in 1986, one of the key figures of its success joined the team: Antonia Caldés Munar, wife of Martí Amengual Mascaró. In 1986, the Amengual Caldés family took over the management of the company.
During the 1990s and early 2000s, the company stabilized. The fleet was continuously renewed, but with no significant increases. In 2007, we opened our office in Ca’n Pastilla to streamline one of the company’s key services: car rental delivery at Palma de Mallorca Airport. This led to another increase in the Motos Formentor fleet.
Many things have changed in these 65 years of history, but our dedication to helping you discover Mallorca in the best possible way—by traveling at your own pace with a rental car—has remained the same.
